Olson's the name,
Ag's the game.
Olsons' Custom Farm Services has been family owned and operated for 3 generations. Throughout the generations, many aspects of the business have changed and expanded.
Melvin S Olson was hired by Peterson-Biddick in 1930 as the Branch Manager for their new Sebeka location. Melvin handled only a few feed items. He also sold chicks, poultry remedies and bought and sold eggs. During the early 1940's, this location flooded twice so PB decided to purchase a new lot and construct a new store. Once in this location the operation expanded greatly to include Hybrid Seed Corn, fertilizer, bulk garden seed and plants. Melvin also bought tons of poultry and often had so many eggs it would take 3 people an entire day to candle all of them.
It soon became apparent that he needed to able to grind and make some of their own feeds. In 1961 Melvin's son flew out to Pennsylvania to pick up the new Daffin Mobile Feed Mill. The new business operated together with PB and was named Melvin S. Olson and Sons Mobile Feed Service.
In 1972 Peterson-Biddick sold the Sebeka location to Melvin. By this time the business was changing again, very few chickens and eggs were bought. In May 1953, 23,432 dozen eggs were bought and in May 1973, only 1,160 dozen were bought. On July 1, 1973 they discontinued buying eggs.
In 1974, after 45 years of serving the public, Melvin decided to retire and sell the business to his son Murlin. Murlin started to expand into the custom spraying business and in 1978 he purchased a 4-wheel drive pickup and a 525 gallon sprayer.
Murlin continued expanding the business with more trucks and semi-trucks. In the spring of 1981 Murlin bought Lillquist Equipment and became a Massey Ferguson dealer, adding equipment and parts to the growing list of services he offered to the community.
In 1996, a Feed mill was constructed so more of the feeds could be made in town again. It was at that time that Mac graduated from Agri-business Management at Willmar Tech, the same program his dad completed 25 years earlier.
Once Mac was finished with his schooling, the business continued to grow and update equipment. Murlin and Mac made the decision in 2000 to buy Verndale Ag Services.
In January 2007, Schmitt Feed and Produce of Staples was acquired by the corporation. While that was an exciting time in the business history, the excitement turned to sadness in July when Murlin passed away after a 5 year battle with Multiple Myeloma.
On December 11, 2014 a fire destroyed the main offices, retail store and warehouse in Sebeka. During the planning process of rebuilding, Mac decided to build a new location on US HWY 71, north of Sebeka. The new location opened the doors on September 14, 2015.
